This July, the 1000 Hills Challenge returns, offering a legendary test of endurance across some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most breathtaking terrain. The event takes runners through the scenic landscapes of Nagle Dam in the heart of the Valley of 1000 Hills, where rolling hills, dramatic red cliffs, and dense bushveld set the stage for a truly immersive trail experience.
Long-course runners circumnavigate the entire dam, navigate riverine sections, tackle adventurous river crossings, and conquer steep climbs, while the short course winds through the dam via an exciting tunnel and around its lower half. Along the way, encounters with wildlife—including zebras, giraffes, impalas, and Nguni cattle—add a touch of African wilderness to the journey, while vibrant birdlife paints the landscape in color.
The challenge is complemented by a lively race village featuring delicious food and drinks, massage therapists, trail gear, and a vibrant community atmosphere. Participants also enjoy the unique experience of running through the African thornveld, crossing varied terrains that are rarely accessible on foot. With its mix of physical challenge, stunning scenery, and distinctive trail-running character, the 1000 Hills Challenge continues to be a highlight on KZN’s trail calendar.
